Are there scams on etsy

If anything, you could try to see who left reviews and message them questions if you are unsure. What if the seller has great feedback, has been a seller on Etsy for a good amount of time, seems honest and professional, and is still able to take your money and not deliver you your vintage teak furniture after 4 months of correspondence and payments?

I was told by Etsy after the seller was suspended by Etsy to arrange for my last two payments via personal check to help facilitate my delivery. My first two payments were with Paypal and the other two were personal checks. This transaction and correspondence started back on March 28th of this year and was devised of 4 payments from April to July. She told me that she was suspended for shipping large items to a few states in the US and that when they didnt arrive right away a buyer complained multiple times hence she was suspended in June.

She said that the buyers got to keep their items and she was forced to refund them as well. This was found to not be true it was the opposite she was the one that took their money and never shipped them their items. She made it seem like her account would be reinstated once the buyers received their items. She lied to me repeatedly over the course of a 4 month period about ALL details and of course I found this out after the fact. And btw she lives in my state about an hour and a half away.

After I spoke to her twice via cell on delivery day involving a truck rental on July 24th she was still waiting for she decided to "ghost" me hence no communication via cell and email after that date.

Etsy has refunded me my first two payments via Paypal and the other two she still has. I will be taking legal action against this seller shortly that has now been banned by Etsy to get my money back and to put a stop to her thieving and fraudulent activities! I do have to say that upon hearing what happened to me Etsy's customer service rep took immediate action and refunded me two payments within a few minutes apart and banned her also. And btw I wasnt the only one on Etsy that she did this to.

This was to be my 26th Wedding Anniversary July 10th gift from my loving and kind husband. I will still purchase items on Etsy but no more personal checks for me only Paypal and Credit cards from now on no exceptions.

It seems a buyer can do everything right and still be taken advantage of hence stolen from and defrauded. I would never pay for an online purchase using a check, unless there is a long established relationship with the Seller.

It's really important to use a credit card or Paypal, as you mention, in order to have protection. Etsy can't and no online platform, I imagine could refund money that they haven't processed. I'm glad you will pursue legal action and wish you all the best. Hearing about the few bad sellers online makes all us long time, honest sellers really angry.

It can reflect badly on everyone. Thank you for not tarring us all with the same brush Who told you it was okay and safe to use checks for this seller? Etsy or the seller? Etsy does not offer protection for using checks.

If the seller was removed from Etsy by Etsy that is a red flag. But I know if you are doing something custom and are arranging via convo messaging be sure the transaction is complete. I didn't really have a legal leg to stand on as she didn't complete invoicing with me. I advise to pay via PayPal as you have insurance then. In your Search, limit the location to the US.

Never use a debit card even if it says VISA on the front bc big banks won't go to bat for you. Google the company using the word "complaints about name of company " if there have been other complaints, something will come up but you may need to go to page 2 of Google everything on first page is RARELY all there is.

If you suspect a scam, try snopes. Even during Roman times when Latin was used the phrase, "Buyer beware" existed. In addition to looking at the seller's feedback I would look to see if they have policies and an "about" page set up. An "about" page is an opportunity for the seller to tell their story about how they make their craft and what inspires them.

Or if the sellers does vintage they may trace how they got into dealing antiques as my own about page does. Sellers who are scammers and resellers tend to leave these bits blank or with just a few bland comments. They never write with passion and enthusiasm because they do not make the objects they well or buy them from wholesalers.

You can learn a lot about the seller by looking at their "about" page. Honestly etsy sellers love to scam. I know a lot do the asian drop ship thing and scam many people into buying what they didn't say for. If they don't have reviews, be skeptical. Of course, reviews can be padded so you may not have a way to tell. I read the other day that Amazon is adding a new marketplace, similar to Etsy.

I assume that Amazon will stand behind items sold on their site. We'll see Be careful. I believe Ebay and Etsy have insiders getting a kickback and innocent people like us buyers or sellers are getting ripped off. Shes not getting a dime from me. Etsy paid her a refund, they can eat it.

I have closed any avenues for them to get money from me and will dispute any collection agency who they contact. They are both rippoffs! Beware buyers and potential sellers. Lots of stories here of bad experiences on etsy, which made me worry when I ran into a rogue seller.

Just after that, while the seller was still advertising identical items which did not correspond with the image shown , his store disappeared from etsy. So, I would say that in most cases, it looks like etsy have a clean bill of health, but if you are thinking of making a purchase and have any misgivings, use your credit card, then you have a plan B if etsy cannot help.

Sucks about your bad experience with Etsy. And for the most part they arrived very quickly. Hi Mrs. Maroon, how long did it take to have your items from etsy deliver?

I recently purchased something from TheNeoteric on this past Monday evening, and wanted to see if I will get what I ordered before Christmas Eve? I love looking at Etsy and I thought that all the sellers there are legitimate and verified. Thanks for this warning! In the future if I buy anything there I will definitely pay with a credit card!! Thanks for sharing the story of what happened to you. Wow, that sucks. Fight for you rights! Good luck! I feel ya on the convenience of paying with the checking accout too, instead of digging out a credit card.

Good tip! I could probably benefit from having a cc number memorized…. I hope you get a refund soon though. Cute jacket! That sucks! Sorry to hear that Holly. Still a hassle, but thankful the card company was the one that had to handle it. Yep, one call to your credit card company and they handle it all.

I hope you get your money back. My only purchases have been small. I did get my money back from Paypal, but it makes me look at etsy differently now. I never bought on Etsy, but your experience is sort of like why I sell less and less on ebay. Ever since they changed the policy where the buyer is right, the seller has to eat the loss. In your case, you should get your money back, but Etsy taking that stand reminded me a lot of ebay. I sold some clothes on ebay and had one person say a new shirt with tags had a hole in it.

My mom had an issue with paypal and her bank a week or so ago.. Someone stole her debit card info and bought something on Ebay through paypal.. I have always bought things on etsy, but always had good luck.

Credit card fraud protection puts the burden on the seller to fix the issue. How obnoxious! I think international sellers are red flags in general.

Good reminder to read seller feedback on any site before placing an order. If a deal seems too good to be true, it typically is.

Very little in the way of protection. When buying I only use Paypal or Credit Card. Only one charge-back issue in all my years buying, thankfully, but the fraudulent shops are rampant these days.

Paypal has pretty good customer service though. Just went through a two month ordeal where I purchased a ring that turned out to be fake.

I had purchased on etsy for years and even opened a small shop on there. I noticed the big changes on Etsy in the past few years, and as a result I have rarely made purchased on there and I have had my shop on temporary close for awhile , but I have continued to purchase a lot on ebay. I have only had one problem on ebay in all these years, and they handled it immediately, without me having to jump through hoops.

Ebay thanked my for alerting them to this as it is a strike against the scamming seller that they would have gotten away with.

In my experience, you are much safer buying on ebay, because they do lean on the sellers to make it right, and they do back their buyers. Maybe just away from international purchases to be on the safe side at least from China and India, both of above problem transactions on Etsy and Ebay were from India, and China, respectively.

Sorry to hear that! I think the anonymity of the internet makes it even easier for folks to flake. I have purchased many, many items from Etsy I love the idea of supporting small businesses who make things by hand , and have never had an issue like this.

One time I ordered a onesie for Little Miss before she was born, and when it arrived the coloring was way off from what I was expecting. I contacted the seller and he redid the entire thing, adjusting the color to my liking, and shipped me the new one for free. That stinks! Hope you get your money back soon. Sorry to hear about this, Holly. It can be such a pain to dig out the credit card but I typically do for this very reason. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Oh no, that really sucks!

Also, I wonder if they will change their policy towards this issue after they go public. Guess it would depend on how strongly I felt about taking a stand just for the principle of the matter. That really sucks. Good luck with everything! Thanks for the heads up on the credit card thing. I did recently have an issue with a Brookstone order for slippers.

The payment got deducted, but I never received a confirmation email about the order or shipping. They created a new order with me, but I had to go back through PayPal to get the funds back. Another example of it being better to just use your card. So I requested that, and it was pending for awhile. Then we got two boxes of slippers, and things got super complicated. It all worked out but it was exhausting.

This kind of stuff is one of the few downsides of shopping online, I guess. Sorry to hear, Holly. A scam jacket deal could have turned into much more.

In any case I am glad that you will did get your money back. Yes, this is exactly why I purchase through Paypal. If you use your credit card, you are opening yourself up to identity fraud. At least you have protection using the third party.

You will still have a long process to get through, proving the fraudulent charges, or getting your money back in the event you have a bad transaction on these sites. At least with Paypal, you have some protection. I think most people on there are on the up and up and honest, but you get a few bad apples in every bunch. This is one of the biggest reasons I use credit cards to pay Oh no!

So sorry this happened to you! I used to sell on Etsy a long time ago and their customer service actually protected the buyer way more than the seller. I was very pleasantly surprised with Amazon, though. Who do we talk to? I'm scared. There is a new scam. People sell expensive items in a shop.

When someone buys from the 1st shop, the shop buys really cheap items from another shop and demand tracking numbers. They tell that 2nd shop to ship to the original buyer or an address nearby. The 2nd shop ships the tracked item and the original customer gets something they never ordered or someone down the street gets it. The scam shop uses the tracking number to prove deliver of the expensive item. Since it is delivered according to the tracking number the original buyer cannot get refunded.

When I contacted the supplier via email, the person had not even shipped it. Two weeks had passed. Exactly what happened to me.

I purchased a drone from a seller and it took the seller a week to ship. Every excuse Finally gave me a tracking number from the post office not FedEx like he promised. Showed delivered in two days, yet nothing at my locked mailbox. Got the package from my neighbor, addressed to an unknown person and it contained a bottle of dishwashing detergent shipped from Walmart! I complained to the seller and Etsy. Took several days before the shop closed and someone else that was taken left a bad review.

Etsy is still reviewing, saying that they need to talk to the seller to get his side of the transaction. Good luck with that. OMG I am scared that's what's happening now with me. I did pay for a heat press machine and I did notice that the seller didn't shipped it yet to me and he did sell the same machine 22 times for others? What I have to do now? How can I be refunded in this case? I had the same thing just happen to me too. The seller weirdly made a mistake though: they refunded me the purchase price, minus the sales taxes.
