The Illinois Library Association reports , as recently as , a school system required parents to sign a permission slip for their child to read the book in class. It is constantly in the back of my mind. Katie Cline is a graduate student in English. The views and opinions expressed in this column are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the Collegian.
It is considered a filthy book that consists of negative thoughts. Around the globe many books are banned from schools and libraries because of their content. Though many others disagree with the banning of books, because it takes away freedom of speech.
Many books are banned and challenged because their content is considered inappropriate or offensive to the readers.
But, others find that it goes against our First Amendment rights when they take away what someone else has written. Butler University also shows other reasons for why books are often times banned. If you had been told your entire life that books are evil, it would be hard to change your views without experiencing it for yourself. When Beatty talks to Montag, he tries to convince him that he should not be curious about books.
Beatty tells him the truth about their society. By sharing this with Montag, Beatty makes Montag rethink everything that he thought that he knew about life. The fact of the matter is that students do not hold the attention span or mental capacity to be forced to deal with this. With my own boys growing up, it was hard seeing them encounter some of the less pleasant parts of our society. But that solves nothing. Nor does it prepared them to be adult participants in a healthy democracy. They are vital specifically because they are not written for young readers. Instead, they prepare a young person for adulthood a nation that requires both our critical attention and our hopeful imagination.
Great literature matures us, and opens our eyes to the real. Thankfully, the school board in Santa Rosa made the right choice. Bradbury will still be taught.
