Matill de Grenehalgh and William de Grenholl were both recorded in County Lancashire in the year Gilbert del Whithalgh of Preston in Arthur Greenhalgh of Heep, , Wills at Chester. Jame Greenalgh of Cornerow in By , therefore, Greenhalgh was a common surname in parts of Salford Hundred, though in places which were some distance from the two localities which could have given rise to the name.
The surname was still very numerous in the parishes of Deane, Bury and Bolton le Moors at the end of the 17th century. Outside Salford Hundred the surname does not seem to have been common anywhere in Lancashire. In the Oath Rolls there are two persons of the name listed in West Derby Hundred, and one in the borough of Preston, but there are none in the north Lancashire Hundred of Lonsdale.

During the 16th century other forms, such as Grenhough and Grinshalghe appear, used by families whose surname is in other instances spelt Grenehalgh or Greenhalgh.
